Award-winning oil painter Erickson's devotion to sharing her love of plein air painting techniques is clear from the first pages of this book. The introduction defines plein air painting as working outdoors with the subject of the art in plain view. The book documents the history of this approach and guides readers through its benefits, such as improved or new connections with nature and the environment. Before the author gives instructions, she talks about "The Zone," which is a way of thinking about one's barriers or limitations to learning something new and how to take a step back and readjust to successfully learn new lessons. The book provides detailed information about materials and instructions for properly executed brushstrokes and capturing ideal colors and lighting effects. Each technique is clearly explained, accompanied by an exercise to practice, key jargon to remember, and captioned illustrations and photographs. VERDICT This resource is a great addition to crafts collections. Suitable for both experienced artists and novices interested in this artistic practice.--Laura Ellis
