Bécquer (1836–1870) adoptó su seudónimo del nombre de un antepasado flamenco, ya que había sido bautizado Gustavo Adolfo Domínguez Bastida, que definitivamente es menos evocador que el que adoptó. Considerado uno de los grandes poetas españoles del siglo XIX, sus Rimas han sido aceptadas no solo por el gran público, sino también por los círculos más selectos, ya que ellas, sin retórica, con un lenguaje lírico, son un canto a la incomprensión del ser amado. Esta versión de la Rimas no solo incluye las 76 publicadas en la edición original, sino las adiciones que fueron descubiertas posteriormente. Las leyendas reflejan un sentimiento romántico con sus imágenes y momentos que llegan al límite de lo macabro.

He is considered one of the greatest Spanish poets and prose writers of the 19th, century and his Rimas are accepted not only by the great public but also by the most selected circles, as they, without any rhetoric, sing to the misunderstanding of the loved one. This edition of the Rimas, includes not only the 76 published in the original edition but also the additions made posthumously. The legends mirror a romantic sentiment with their images that sometimes are in the limits of the macabre.
