This recording offers the rare opportunity to listen to Thich Nhat Hanh deliver the teachings that inspired the creation of his best-selling and perhaps most well-known book Being Peace, considered a classic of contemporary religious literature. An assembly of 700 people gathered at Green Gulch Farm in Muir Beach, California, on November 3, 1985 to listen to the wisdom and guidance of this world-renowned Vietnamese Buddhist monk. In this talk, Thich Nhat Hanh shows how our state of mind and body can make the world a peaceful place, and teaches us how to transform the very situations that pressure and antagonize us into opportunities for practicing mindfulness.

This brief collection is a good introduction to the teachings of Hanh. His signature humor and compassion help to make the content more accessible than some of his other works. He talks carefully and deliberately; however, close attention is still required. This book can serve as a guide for meditation or an opportunity to learn about Buddhism and Hanh's perspective on daily living and peace. Hanh posits that our capacity to smile and to appreciate the beauty of the world contribute to personal understanding and, more broadly, help to balance the anger that sometimes dominates the peace movement. The live recording, from a retreat, has some background noise, but the quality is clear and the distractions minimal. J.E.M. (c) AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine
