Once a promising military intelligence officer and high-functioning heroin addict, Danny Katz now uses his gifts as a linguist and computer programmer in his work as a private investigator. His drug habit ultimately derailed his earlier career, but now he is clean-and self-employed. In short, Katz is used to his fair share of suffering and all too familiar with Stockholm's seedy underbelly.
When his former drug dealer, Ramón, dies from an apparent overdose and Ramón's girlfriend, Jenny, disappears without a trace, Katz suspects that something is amiss. He decides to investigate, enlisting the help of prosecutor Eva Westin (another ex-junkie from his past) to find the missing young woman. It isn't long before the line between Katz's current and former lives begins to blur, raising many questions about his own troubled youth.
Katz's inquiries lead him to the darkest corners of Stockholm's black market, including its porn industry, and he quickly finds his old addiction threatening to reassert its grip on his life. It also becomes clear that someone is willing to do whatever it takes to keep him from discovering the answers to his questions. Will Katz be able to master his personal demons and discover the truth behind Ramón's death and Jenny's disappearance before the city's netherworld once again claims him as its own?

When a friend entices 40-year-old Jorma Hedlund, a pianist and former burglar, into joining the planned hijacking of an armored car in Stockholm, everything goes wrong. Jorma's acquaintance is killed, and Jorma goes on the run. Meanwhile, Danny Katz, a former friend of Jorma's and an ex-junkie skilled at languages and computing, is investigating an addict's suspicious death when he gets help from another drug-period friend, public prosecutor Eva Westin. All three characters' stories come together in a nightmarish House of Pain that involves drugs and sex trafficking, illegal immigrants and high-level corruption. This, plus a prostitute's family seeking vengeance, lead to a violent conclusion. VERDICT In this second volume in Vallgren's gritty crime series (after The Boy in the Shadows), the violence and drug scenes are graphically haunting, the pace is frenetic, and the terror palpable. There are some loose ends, but this is a strong entry in the gripping Scandinavian noir tradition.--Roland Person, formerly with Southern Illinois Univ. Lib., Carbondale

Vallgren plumbs the depths of Sweden’s pornography industry in his searing second Danny Katz thriller (after 2016’s The Boy in the Shadows). Katz, a former military intelligence officer who was once a heroin addict, has a talent for languages and a sporadic craving for heroin. He’s 10 years clean and working as a security consultant and translator when he encounters Ramón, once his drug dealer and fellow petty criminal, and Ramón’s junkie girlfriend, Jenny. After Ramón and Jenny suddenly disappear, Katz embarks on a tortuous quest into their degraded present and his own tawdry past, encountering such ugly aspects of contemporary Sweden as rampant cross-border financial crimes, large-scale police corruption, the rising specter of neo-Nazism, and a thriving sex trade. With an old Balkan criminal comrade of his, Jorma, Katz discovers excruciating truths that bring them both to the brink of despair. The extremely dark subject matter may put some readers off.
