Natty Bumppo is compelled to advance westward across the prairie as he journeys in search of freedom from civilizing schedules. He is bent upon maintaining an unceremonious life, but society's restrictions gradually limit his pursuit of serenity. He is companioned by solitude and not by intellectual exercises, so eventually his heart pays attention to the problems of the relocation of Indians, the spoiling of nature, and the creation of a fair-minded society. Bumppo's career comes to a close amid the Pawnee and Sioux tribes of the Great Plains. Here the loss of humility, fortitude, and Christian deference is grievous, and Bumppo's physical valor is incapable of stopping the plunder of fast-paced domestication, but this voyager still sees endless opportunities for moral progress.
