Joseph Haydn

His Life and Works

Audiobook (Includes supplementary content)

Symphonies, quartets, concertos and keyboard works poured from the pen of Joseph Haydn, making him one of the most important figures in classical music. Jeremy Siepmann tells the story of the man and his work in this lively autobiography, enhanced by numerous examples of the music itself, taken from the Naxos catalogue. There is no better programme with which to mark the 200th anniversary of the composer's death.

Pianist/scholar/broadcaster Siepmann's (www.jeremysiepmann.com) aural biography of Joseph Haydn (17321809) is perfectly punctuated with 28 examples of the Austrian composer's musical works. The blend gives listeners an equally in-depth feel for the man (nice guy, bad marriage, mercurial finances) and the artist. Audie Award winner Siepmann himself narrates, his British accent lending a PBS-type of gravitas to Haydn's story. Five professional actors read excerpts from letters and diary entries, further helping to create a sense of time and place. Highly recommended for those interested in biographies and music histories.Judith Robinson, Univ. at Buffalo
